Setup Email on “New” Outlook
“Outlook for Windows” or “New Outlook” is a Microsoft email client intended to eventually replace Outlook 365 AKA “Classic Outlook”. At time of writing, New Outlook seems undercooked with many essential features missing. But there’s no accounting for taste so here’s setup instructions anyway.
Open up the New Outlook app.
If you’ve never setup any account with New Outlook used it before you’ll be prompted to begin setup. If you already have accounts you’ll need to select Add account, either on the left side of the screen, or from within Settings under the Accounts tab.
Enter your email address and press Continue.
Select IMAP for email provider.
You’ll be prompted to enter email settings.
- For Password enter the email address password.
- Make sure Show more is activated.
- It doesn’t seem to matter whether Use recommended settings is activated or not.
- IMAP Incoming server
- For IMAP Incoming server set “ax.email“.
- For Port set “993“.
- For Secure connection type select “SSL/TLS“.
- SMTP Configuration
- For SMTP username set the entire email address. In this example it would be “janedoe@widgetbiz.com.au“.
- For SMTP password set the email address password, same as the previous password field.
- For SMTP Outgoing server set “ax.email“.
- For Port set “465“.
- For Secure connection type select “SSL/TLS“.
Once everything is entered, press Continue and you should connect successfully.
At this point, we’d usually show you how to set your name and organisation for your email address, which would be included as meta information in emails you send. Unbelievably, this basic feature is missing in New Outlook at time of writing. So that’s that!
